Tips for Learning to Drive and

Passing Your Driving Test

When it comes to taking your driving test, you of course, want to pass!!

In 2011, around 1.3 million driving tests were conducted. Only around half of which resulted in a pass!

As you can see not everyone passes, at least not first time!

However, if you follow these simple tips and guidelines and gain the best driving tuition you should be one of the many that succeeds and does pass!

For the best chance to pass first time book the best Driving Lessons Leeds

Ultimately being properly trained fully prepared is the key!

Start by finding a good driving instructor. Ask friends and relatives. Don't assume the cheapest is the best! Check the grade and experience of the instructor (Grade 6 is the best standard and quality but rare and hard to find). Is he/she fully qualified?

Read information on finding and choosing a good instructor here

Take your time in the early stages of learning. By this I mean don't just rush out on to busy roads and leave yourself having to deal with complex junctions, roundabouts and a lot of traffic if you haven't yet got the hang of the controls.

Spend some quality time in the first few hours really getting to grips and gaining confidence with setting off, changing gears, cornering and steering, clutch control, reversing and smooth accurate braking - car control.

If you invest some time and become confident with the controls properly you will be able to concentrate on the road and all the complex situations and decisions to be made without having to be concentrating too much on the car control.

Gaining the best training will ensure you learn properly, effectively and usually quicker than 'cheap' driving lessons

Private practice can come in very useful. Having a friend or relative be able to spend some time with you during these early hours will be a huge benefit. Ensure that the person supervising and helping you is legal to do so and that they are working in line with your driving instructor.

More advice and help on supervising a learner

It is always beneficial to read and understand the Highway Code either before starting to learn to drive or certainly in the first few hours. Understanding what signs and markings mean helps you deal with them easier when you come up against them for the first time on the roads.

Studying for and taking the theory test and hazard perception test early on in your learning also helps. Similarly to understanding the Highway Code many things that crop us in the theory and hazard perception will happen on the roads, so you should find yourself more prepared and understanding easier.

Also, if you leave taking/passing the theory test too late, you could end up being prepared and ready for a practical test; but not be able to book the practical as you need to have passed the theory before you can book a practical test.

The driving test

Don't book a practical test until you are fully confident and competent with all situations on the roads: all junction types, roundabouts, traffic lights, dual carriageways, country lanes, busier traffic and the turn in the road, reversing round a corner and parking.

If your instructor is still having to guide or help you with any of these areas you are probably not ready to take the test. You need to be able to deal with everything independently.

You should feel confident on the road and that you can drive without many any serious or potentially serious errors.

Proper driver training massively helps you gain the essential skills that make driving easy

Read our page on 'Driving Test Nerves' to understand more about the test and your driving skills

When it is time, and you book your driving test, keep it quiet!!

The less people that know about your test, the less pressure there will be on you on the day.

Try and gain some familiarity with some of the roads and complex junctions and situations in the test area. You don't need to learn test routes, but to have a familiarity with the local area will be of some benefit.

While practising with your instructor and any private practice you can get try and experience all types of driving situations, different areas, different weather, night and day, and try driving in towns or areas you are unfamilier with - this will help you concentrate and really learn to read the road, the signs and markings and improve your confidence

Remember, Practice, Practice, Practice!

During your time of learning to drive if there is anything you are not sure about, or don't understand - ASK your driving instructor - that is what they are there for!

On the day of the test, it is usually beneficial to have a 'warm up' lesson with your instructor (or supervisor) just before the test. This will allow you to settle, get your head in 'driving mode' and be able to practice anything you may wish to.

Arrive at the test in good time. A few minutes before hand is ideal.

If you start to feel really nervous at any time on the day or just before the test - don't worry - it is normal.

Use the nervous energy to concentrate.

Take 3 deep breaths and breathe in and out slowly for about 20 to 30 seconds - it works!! The best method is to breathe in for a count of about 7 seconds then breathe out for about 9 seconds

While you are out on the driving test, listen to the examiner and the directions and concentrate on what you are doing - don't look at or think about the examiner.

You are not being tested, it is your opportunity to demonstrate you can drive a car safely - keep your mind focussed on the road and what to do next

To learn the best techniques to use to control your driving, become a naturally intuitive and safe driver and easily pass the driving test contact us today - see our testimonials page to learn what our previous learners think about our training techniques

If you misunderstand the examiner or miss a direction, don't worry, simply ask the examiner to repeat.

You don't need to exaggerate any 'things' on the test, like moving head to show you are checking a mirror - the examiner knows what they are doing, they have been trained to watch you and they know whether you are doing things correctly or just because you are told to - let them do their job and you concentrate on the road.

In fact, if you have to move your head to take a glance in a mirror the examiner will view it that you have not set the mirrors in the correct place for you to drive safely so will be wondering why didn't you set the car up properly for you to drive it

While out on the test, it is a good idea to 'talk' yourself through what you are doing and need to do next (best to talk in your head, not out loud!). Ask your instructor for help on how to do this - it really does help!! Using the trained technique of working out what to do next (by using your eyes and brain in unison to work out your speed and space) will pretty much ensure you don't make any serious or potentiall serious driving errors at all

For information on proper driver training and using our proven techniques

If you make a mistake on the test - don't think you have failed!! Quite often the examiner will judge how you deal with the situation or error and manage to correct yourself and not lose concentration due to it. Keep concentrating, forget the error, deal with, correct it, and move on - concentrate on what is coming up next - don't dwell on what's just happened!

Be confident!! Your instructor would not have put you in for the test if you weren't ready! So, believe in yourself! Believe you WILL Pass! Keep a positive mind! Concentrate and ENJOY the test - your only driving a car!

To pass your driving test you need to drive without making any serious or dangerous faults and no more than 15 minor faults during a drive of about 40 minutes. You must also complete several manoeuvres safely.

When you pass - remember you will always learn something new, everyday when driving, so keep using your eyes, concentrating, keep practising and enjoy driving!!
