Eco Driving Tips and Training

Especially in our current economic climate we are all trying to save money and costs in any way we can.

By changing some driving styles and ensuring your vehicle is properly maintained can save at least 15% on fuel costs alone!

As and experienced and Eco driving instructor, it is normal policy to incorporate most of the modern Eco driving styles during driving lessons; so most new drivers will benefit from certain driving styles that will keep fuel costs as low as possible.

To learn more and receive a one to one, in car session, to help you in saving fuel and reducing your motoring costs why not book one of our Eco Driving sessions at

only £24 for an hour or £45 for a 2 hour.

Top Tips to Help Reduce Fuel and Motoring Costs

Change up to a higher gear as soon as possible

In normal driving situations you will use less fuel by simply changing to a higher gear a little sooner. Where possible by driving at lower engine speeds uses less fuel.

A typical opportunity to incorporate this technique is while driving around built up, 30mph areas.

Many drivers stay in 3rd gear, when realistically most cars can easily cope with 4th gear at, or just under 30mph (unless climbing a steep gradient). By using a higher gear you are also reducing engine wear so prolonging the life of the engine.

Anticipation and driving smoothly

Looking and planning further ahead while driving can ultimately save your fuel consumption. Rather than leaving any required braking to the last minute, by planning ahead and easing of the accelerator sooner allows the car to decelerate using engine braking.

With the car in gear and the accelerator released a modern car won't use any fuel at all. In addition this method is also smoother for the car and its occupants.

Generally maintain a steadier speed and a higher gear

Driving at a steady speed requires little effort for the engine. Avoiding unnecessary acceleration and heavy braking helps reduce your fuel consumption.

Keeping an eye on your speed, and not exceeding speed limits can save fuel. Most cars are the most fuel efficient at around 45 - 55 mph.

Switch off!!

If you are likely to be stationary for a fairly long period of time, such as long traffic light stops, or waiting to pick someone up, switch the engine off rather than leaving it ticking over on idle.

Some modern 'Eco' cars actually switch the engine off when waiting in queues and automatically re start again when the car is put in to gear.

Check your tyres

Keep your tyres at optimum pressures.

Under-inated tyres not only lead to poor road holding but also cause

excessive drag and resistance, and as a result increase fuel consumption.

Both over and under-inated tyres can be dangerous to road holding, so make sure

your tyres are at their recommended pressure.

Reduce air conitioning usage

Switch off air conditioning unless absolutely necessary.

Use air conditioning sparingly as your engine has to work harder to make the

air conditioning machinery work. If driving at low speed, open the window.

Close windows

Close your windows if travelling at 50mph or more

The aerodynamic drag on your car of an open window at speeds of 50mph or

more can add to your fuel usage. Keep your windows closed at high speeds.

Remove roof boxes and roof racks

Remove roof boxes and roof racks if not being used

Car designers work hard to make their products as aerodynamic as possible.

Adding a roof box or rack can spoil this by increasing drag on your car and

therefore increasing your engine workload and fuel usage.

A Spanish research study found that using a large roof box whilst travelling at

motorway speeds could increase your fuel consumption by as much as 39%.

So, if not in use, remove them.

Lose weight!

Carrying excess weight in a vehicle increases fuel consumption, so heavy or

large items, e.g. heavy tool kits, golf clubs, and all that other junk you carry around in the boot  should be removed when not required.

Do regular car maintenance checks :

By doing some routine checks you can cut down on the cost of owning a car as well as fuel emissions, eg screen wash, engine oil, brake fluids, tyre wear, wheel balancing and alligning

Use the right motor oil

Go for "energy conserving" performance symbol on the label oil which can save your 1 to 2 percent of gas mileage.

Don't buy higher-octane fuel

Normal cars do not need high performance fuel. Higher-octane fuel won’t make your car run faster unless and until your car needs it. The right fuel is recommended in car manufacturer’s manual.

Consider car sharing

Could you and a friend, relative or work colleague consider taking it turns to drive therefore halving costs between you. If 3 or 4 of you could take it in turns to drive and use a car think of the potential savings!

Before you start off

It is must to use car?

Avoid using your car all the time. Consider some alternatives. Ride a bike or walk - also think of the advantage to your fitness and health.

Combine your journeys

Warmed-up engines produce lower emissions, so try to combine short trips into one to save fuel and cut down on pollution.

Plan your journey

Plan your journeys to avoid congestion and road works, and to make sure you don't waste fuel or time in the journey. This can also assist in reducing stress!

By following some of these eco driving tips you can save yourself money and help the planet, while cutting down on fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions.
